Probably No Updates This Week

People keep saying this site is too long-winded and the writing is too lengthy.

The reason I write the way I do is because I do everything in a stream-of-consciousness, single draft style.  No revisions, no editing, just spit it out as it comes to me.

But if enough people keep complaining about something, I need to take that into account.  Therefore I’m going to work on concision for  the remaining few drafts of Myth of the Middle Class Male as well as edit down all my old articles over time in an effort to cut down the word count of this blog by 1/3 or more.

For every person who complains about the post lengths, there might be nine or nineteen readers who like your posts the way they are now. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t omit needless words, but you should think twice about changing your style just because “people” keep complaining.

  2. Monad posted the following on March 10, 2010 at 4:16 PM.

If you consider the feedback from your readers, with them stating your posts are too long winded, then maybe they have a short attention span? Or maybe they are dumb fucks? Or both?

Anyway, plenty of bloggers split up their posts into 4 and 5 and 6 segments. It depends upon whether you want to cater to the masses or a core following?

Either way, you will have (more or less) interested people reading your stuff.

You’ll work out the best format, though regardless I’ll be waiting for your next post, long or short.

    Cheers.

M with the dot – I agree with you about not being rash, but this isn’t a new complaint, I’ve been hearing it for over a year. Even when people like my posts, they often say “despite how long-winded it is, it’s pretty damn good.” If it was a new thing or just a few people I’d be like “fuck it,” but this has been more than a few people so I figured I should pay attention.

    Monad – appreciate the feedback.

For the record, I LIKE the posts the way they are.

Also, I loved the novel that seemed to be unfolding in parts one and two. I think you should consider continuing it.

Would they have liked it as much if it was not so “long winded”? Where do you draw the line? You write a post in a stream of conciousness, then you have to spend how long trying to edit it to be popular to the intellectual masses. Who much will this effect your premise and ultimately your conclusion?

I guess only you will know based upon trial and error.

However, I will be following your blog regardless.

HA. Now it’s going to look like I put this post up to fish for compliments.

  7. WestIndianArchie posted the following on March 10, 2010 at 4:46 PM.

I much prefer the longer posts. If you do any editing, make sure it’s for clarification purposes.

  8. T. AKA Ricky Raw posted the following on March 10, 2010 at 5:10 PM.

Yeah, it’s only for clarification purposes, primarily taking out repetitive/redundant sentences and paragraphs. And while I’m at it I’m going to take the time to clean up the post tagging and the categories to make them more consistent, thorough and accurate. Nothing is getting dumbed down.

I just recently found your site. Although a newbie’s opinion wouldn’t carry much weight, I still have to say that the content, structure, and length of your posts are great.

  12. sean posted the following on March 10, 2010 at 7:25 PM.

Another vote here for keeping your content just the way it is. And, by the way, thanks for writing.

I also like it as-is, but then again I read Moldbug.

  14. Chris posted the following on March 11, 2010 at 12:15 AM.

I’m with those saying there’s no need to change. You rarely get repetitive to me, so the post length just serves to explore the subject with more depth, one of the things I enjoy about your posts. Don’t change it unless you want to and really think it will significantly improve your points.

On a different note, I’m not a big fan of the Myth of The Middle Class Alpha series. I vote you go back to the Immortal or Renaissance Man series, or start something new soon. But I’ll keep reading regardless.

  15. Joey Giraud posted the following on March 11, 2010 at 12:21 AM.

Don’t worry about length and under no circumstances become the least bit dicouraged! Everyone’s writing could always use some more cleanup, at some point bait must be cut. Your ideas matter more then the vehicle. And matter they do.

  16. T. AKA Ricky Raw posted the following on March 11, 2010 at 12:24 AM.

Geez, people, I’m not suicidal, despondent or discouraged here! It’s just something I think will really help the blog if I can pull it off the way I envision. Don’t turn this into an episode of Intervention. Wait until you see the initial results, and if the feedback is mostly negative I’ll go back to the old way. Promise.

Don’t worry too much about it please, just maybe give a summary/bullet point at the beginning or end to recapitulate, but this shit is cosmetic only!

Intervention? Once again, failure to read everything before posting results in a multipost pileup, my front end is scrunched.

I like the middle-class Alpha series.

I think some editing would be necessary if you would like to publish some of your writing, but blogs are about working out fresh ideas and not worrying about everything being polished.

  24. Wocka posted the following on March 11, 2010 at 11:01 AM.

all this time reading this blog, I never noticed these issues.

Don’t listen to those clowns. I for one immensely enjoy reading your “wordy” posts, and I know several others who do as well. I have yet to read one of your posts where I felt that there was some information included that wasn’t necessary or helpful for your point. Just keep doing exactly what you’re doing; if these complaining hammerheads can’t keep their head together for the 10 minutes it takes to read one of your posts, then fuck ‘em.

  26. Ace posted the following on March 11, 2010 at 12:45 PM.

I thought this was YOUR blog. You shouldn’t have to pare down any of your ‘rawness’ for anyone other than your boss. Nothing wrong with refinement, but do it on your terms, not because of some people complaining.

However, sprinkling hits of the Enter Key a few times in between thoughts would be welcome haha

  27. Pops 3284 posted the following on March 11, 2010 at 10:41 PM.

Maybe instead of just every post being a long one on your thoughts, you could have an open post with no topic where you the commentors can have a discussion on whatever they want in the comments section.

  28. Vincent Ignatius posted the following on March 12, 2010 at 8:37 AM.

The posts are just fine now. If there’s no problem, people don’t complain, so those who like the lengthy posts remain silent. M with the dot is probably right.

  29. Mikkel posted the following on March 12, 2010 at 9:19 AM.

I wish to complain about the people complaining about the length of your posts.

Your posts are fine. Don’t waste time editing old post, when you could be writing new ones.

Do a ‘wordy’ raw post. Then edit and refine it. Then let your readers compare the raw and refined T. Could be interesting.

  33. Jonathan S posted the following on March 15, 2010 at 12:00 PM.

I think this is a bad idea.

You’re covering subjects for which entire books have been written and you’re doing it better, and with 1/10th of the required investment.

I will develop you some software which will fingerprint the web browser of the visitors on your site. When that user complains about your posts being too long winded, we’ll just ban that fingerprint.

    No soup for you.

    Fucking idiots.

Damn. Now I’ll have to find 30% more stuff to read…

Maybe I’m slow but I just tied a couple of things together. In a your ‘middle class alpha’ series you talk about polygamy not only being the status quo for most of human evolution, but actually being a better deal for women (since any halfway hot woman could join the harem of a millionaire and live in style instead of settling for average joe). I wonder if this asymmetry is why middle-class women give us middle class guys such a hard time? They’re only a top-50% woman (say) but they’re genetically hard-wired to think they deserve a top-10% man?

  38. Brian posted the following on March 17, 2010 at 3:31 PM.

Keep doing what you are doing. The biggest lesson you’ve taught me is to not bend to other people’s frames. Their demands for you to shorten you words has more to do with their laziness in taking the time to read your articles.

You write, first and foremost, for yourself and those who appreciate what you have to say. Your blog is very thought heavy, so you need to write more. Unlike Roissy, for example, your writing isn’t so short that I’m left wanting more.

As a journalist I was taught to be concise because my readers have little time to spare, considering all the competition there is in the media marketplace.

It’s not easy for everybody to take the time to edit and pare down their words. If you are interesting in honing your writing skills for brevity, I recommend two books: “The Elements of Style” by William Strunk and EB White. “The Associated Press Guide to News Writing” by Rene J. Cappon.
