I’m always surprised that the Darwin-As-Ethic game-pushers have such a violent reaction towards cuckoldry, treating it as a fate nearly as bad as death. Certainly cheating is nothing to be scoffed at, and outrage about that is justifiable. That said, once a child is out, it’s a child, and to most of the population its genetics are only relevant for medical reasons, unless the biological father has any legal claim. The outrage among the Game-pushers seems manufactured to suit the Darwinian worldview, but its vehemence is based on nothing in normal human instinct.

Maybe this is something you need to experience to understand, but I should certainly hope that the vast hordes of people pushing the same outrage have not all experienced their wife having a kid by someone else.

a_c, I don’t think the aversion, outrage and utter fascination with cuckoldry is something manufactured by game-pushers. Look for example at the Maury Povich show. It’s been on over 10 years, used to be a talk show with a whole range of topics. Now it’s basically just a show on cuckoldry. I know people, men and women, who only watch the paternity test episodes and no others. It’s become a gold mind for him. None of these people I know who are obsessed with Maury paternity test result shows are game-pushers or New Darwinists. They’re just regular folk. But the issue really must resonate on a very deep level with a lot of people to be so popular a topic.

A triflin’ ho indeed. Damn.

Thing is, I think that the impact of those shows comes from the fact that a negative paternity test proves that the wife was unfaithful in the past. Of course that’s going to be a big deal! You’ll notice that the talk shows also feature lie detector tests to detect past male cheating, even though evopsych predicts that that will have a lesser emotional impact.

Finding out you’ve been cuckolded is terrible, and I do not mean to downplay that. But I think that most of that impact comes from the “Oh noes, my blushing bride is unfaithful,” not from “Oh noes, my genes aren’t getting passed on!”

I guess y’all have never heard of polyandry. There are a few old tribes in India that still practice it, and they have it down to a precise science/art (regarding paternity).

I’ve heard some African tribes as well, and Amazonian, come to think of it….
