Man, I was looking for a good blog and text about swedish partying/mating culture and this was fantastic. I am from Brazil (Rio de Janeiro) and am going to spend a few days in Stockholm next winter. I felt like I could have written this here based on what I already experienced in other parts of Europe. So, keep up the good work ...

E - yeah, many Stockholm guys and other Europeans mentioned feeling intimidated by muscles of men in America. I felt that way about height when I was in Amsterdam, and I'm 6'2. If weightlifting became an epidemic there, combined with their average height for men (6'7) they'd be the most intimidating guys ever.

Brownngirl - You'd have fun, just make sure to work out before going if you have any cellulite. Even being slightly overweight there sticks out SO much.

Wow, I just learned a lot about Stockholm! Sounds like you had a great time. The small differences and cultural nuances are very interesting. I'd like to go to one of these clubs if for no other reason than to listen to the music!

I live in Tel Aviv, which is somewhat European, I suppose. Your description of Stockholm rang true for some of the things out here, too. Out here, local women act reserved but when on holiday they'll let loose. The reasoning is that the country is small and everyone knows everyone so if you sunbathe topless or make out with a guy you just met, your uncle's friend's neighbor's cousin or whatever might be there and eventually word will get out to your mom that you're a slut. I imagine that something similar is going on out there.

The metrosexual thing hasn't caught on in Israel much. For the most part, being tall, athletic and acting like you don't give a shit about your appearance is going to nab the most chicks. Israelis are short so tall is crucial. Guys here are slimmer that in the States, though, and every trip back to the USA I feel like a wimp.

Whiskey:

American men used to know how to dance, and took great pride in it ? but it was not dancing as we know it today. It was more formal, think Fred Astaire, and focused on being manly and graceful.

Whiskey, you are stating the obvious here. I realize American men used to dance and of course that the dancing was different than today, I doubt George Washington or Fred Astaire were crumping or popping and locking. My point is that most white men nowadays frown on all types of dancing, whether gentlemanly or traditional or modern and hip.

I think the association ?dancing = gay? makes most men poor dancers. I have seen many bad Black American men dancers, so I don?t find it a racial but rather cultural thing.

Yes, there are some bad Black American men dancer, I was not trying to say that 100% of black men dance well any more than I'd try to assert that 100% of white men dance badly. But let's be honest, it's nowhere near as common among black men. But I totally agree on the "dancing=gay" mental block that men have, and I am going to make a post about that this week.

Lurkel:

Oh it's another world all right. Highly recommended.

Pilkington:

Australia is low on my travel priorities. See if you can get another blogger to make the trip.

Alex Kay

Thanks, but damn! Another remark about my long-ass posts. I swear, I'm going to do short post week soon. A series a 5 consecutive 1 paragraph posts.

Heather

Thanks for filling in Mr. P. How've you been babe? Long time no see!

DF

You're from NY, right? I'm sure you've seen Simps' Dilemma in action more times than you care to remember.

VK

They are not crazy about muscle mass apparently, but that is far outweighed by the advantages you get by being a foreigner, the uniqueness your race gives you, and most importantly the fact you have game, swagger and personality. Seriously, cockiness, swagger, good convo, when it shows up there it's worse than when a care package drosp down in the most war-torn, famine-infested part of the 3rd world, that's how starved for good game they are there.

dougjnn

I'm in a committed relationship, so no lurid hookup stories from me. Honestly, my big goal with traveling for the next few years is to broaden my worldview, learn about as many cultures as I can and have friends in every continent that I can show around when they visit NY. My trip wasn't just partying, I did hours of walking tours and museums every day too.

DA

Trust me, the train ain't why they party until 5. Everyone told me the same thing...the winter months are so drab that they overcompensate when partying in the summer.

1) I can't dance for shit, but that's because I'm unathletic and uncoordinated. Hell, when I dance, it comes across as a gay guy dancing than a straight guy...
2) My trip to Sweeden would have been spent riding the subway and railway network instead of clubbing.
3) I wonder if I could find a white girl in Sweeden. I'm skinny with very little muscle...
4) I suspect the clubbers stay out until 5 AM since there the subway doesn't start running until 5 or 6 AM or so, IIRC...

T --

It sure sounds like the environment was right for the likes of you to go to town in Stockholm town. I know it was pretty damn ripe many moons ago when this pale face but long distance foreigner (American) was there. Are you going to completely deny us any lurid hookup details from the field, changing particulars enough to obscure the guilty? Or is that part 4?

A threesome almost happened for me but didn't. Almost happened as in fell into my lap but then circumstances, perhaps "suspicious" kinds of circumstance, left it a "mere" hot girl pairing, after their successful competition with another girl at the club. That kind of thing. Poor deceived me. :D

Man, thanks for this. So you're telling me to skip Sweden because of my muscle mass. Fuck! But on the real I would have totally name dropped some Jens Lekman as an opener. Also good looking out on the sim card tip, I never even thought about that. Now you can say you've got that inernational swagger, must feel nice

I am impressed with this series. BTW, the simps dilemma has to be one of the most innovative descriptions of club life dynamics in NY despite this being a series on Sweden. Very insightful.
