Fox’s Moment of Truth

I predict a lot of people will be talking about Fox’s new show Moment of Truth. Yes, it looks like typical Fox tackiness. Yes, it looks controversial, exploitative and possibly in poor taste. But damn if I’m not going to watch every last minute!

As a guy who’s into human nature and the raw, unfiltered politically incorrect truth, this show will be like crack to me if done right. I love the tagline too: “Controversy comes to Fox!” When does controversy ever fucking leave Fox anyway?

Here are some previews:

My wife feels like the contestants are being expoited and embarassed. But my take on it, if these people know the premise and are willing to sell their dignity for some cash and fame, then they deserve to be made uncomfortable for our entertainment.Show premieres on January 23. Thoughts?

UPDATED: Desiree in the comments section left this gem:

I read somewhere that they had a show very similar to this in another country. I want to say somewhere in South America, but it could’ve been Europe…whatever that is unimportant. The impotant part was that they had to cancel the show when a woman confessed she paid someone to try and kill her husband. Now THAT is gangsta.

It sounded so crazy that I thought it had to be an urban legend. I did a little google checking and lo and behold that craziness really did happen! Check it out:

The hit Colombia TV game show, in which contestants submitting to a lie-detector test must truthfully answer 21 increasingly invasive questions to win US$50,000 (€35,000), has been canceled by Caracol Television after a contestant admitted on air to hiring a hit man to kill her husband. Tuesday was the show’s final day.

However a U.S version called “Moment of the Truth” is expected to be launched on the Fox network in the coming months along with spin-offs in England, Australia, Germany, Italy and Spain, according to Howard Schultz, the Los Angeles-based creator of the show.

If anyone can track down the Youtube for this, please pass it along.

  1. this show has the potential to be genius. sorta like what sasha baron cohen does in illuminating the hypocrisy and falseness of our existence. If i understand the premise of the show, contestants are hooked up to polygraphs and asked controversial questions. But the question’s i’ve heard don’t sound so controversial. Or rather, they’re only so to the extent that you are willing to lie to yourself or to others about them.

“Do obese people digust you?” (The ugly ones. sure)
“Do you really care about starving children in Africa?” (starving in general upsets me. but i don’t identify any more or less with a sudanese infant i’ve never seen)
“Do you think all blonds are dumb?” (YES. now f*ck me)

I’d be in the final round in no time. Tension only builds in a round to the extent that someone is full of their own sh*t!

  3. Dude, you must not have seen all the clips I posted above. The questions get WAY more controversial and personal than that.

They ask a woman “Do you think you’ll still be married in 5 years” in front of her husband.

They ask someone “Do you blame your father for the destruction of your family” in front of her father.

They ask a guy if he ever inappropriately touched female coworkers in front of his wife.

It gets pretty gangsta. I think it’s going to be increasingly controversial questions as you get farther in the competition and more money is at stake. It’ll probably start out with the fat people and Africa questions and then get into some really heinous shit later on.

  4. yeah. i just checked the clips. wow. that’s some heady shit. well, these people signed up for it. as a fan of brutal honesty i definitely think i’m going to enjoy this.
and as an aside, we are within a decade of reality shows involving physical pain, torture and/or death (ala running man)

  5. based on what i’ve seen from youtube, Japanese TV is only 5 months away from that type of shit.

  7. Damn Des, that gem was so good I hate to revise the original post to incorporate it.

  8. I would never agree to be hooked up to a lie detector by people willing to ask anything….

I’ve done too much shit to take that risk of being exposed…

I won’t ever play the drinking game “never have I ever” either..

  9. Meh. Seems like the latest in a l ong line of lowest common denominator-type shows that Americans willingly s uffer through while the networs attempt to screw the writers who are the only ones that can save couch potatoes from this bile.

  11. Bobby - I think the thought of an easy million makes people lose their minds. Lie detector is scary enough…a lie detector run by Fox? Fuhgeddaboutit. No way.

Sornie - I am the poster child for the lowest common denominator, so it’s fine by me. The only thing I draw the line at are NBC “comedies.”

Michelle Ann - That’s just gangsta.

  13. This just seems like a drawn-out overly dramatic episode of Dr. Phil. I don’t really know or care about these people and their lifes so why would I care if they told the truth to random personal questions or if they lie?

  14. Mack - its interesting because the people most affected by the lie are in the audience watching them. The squirm factor is awesome.

  15. I watched a little of the show last night and was unimpressed.. the questions weren’t specific enough…

i only watched one guy but thought that the questions were phrased in a way that let him slide out of anything…
