I've been surprised in embracing this in my own life that others tend to respect your opinions when you are consistent, even where they disagree with you. Fear not the disapproval of others, it really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. The extent to which this happens is, of course, dependent on a lot of different things (maturity, self-confidence, character). And you're very right about the Internet as a medium making it all just that much more complicated.
